Laura Caponetto

Laura Caponetto is a philosopher specialising in applied philosophy of language. She is especially interested in how speech act theory, and pragmatics of conversation more broadly, can be brought to bear on issues of political, moral, and societal concern. Laura has published on silencing, refusal and consent, retraction and undoing speech acts, and most recently strategies to counter discriminatory speech. Before joining the University of Milan in 2024, Laura was the Sarah Smithson Research Fellow at Newnham College (University of Cambridge). She has also held positions as a Postdoctoral Researcher at San Raffaele University and as an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Pavia. Laura is currently an Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track Researcher) at the Philosophy Department, University of Milan.

Laura’s achievements include being named on the 100 Italian women experts in History and Philosophy, 100 donne contro gli stereotipi – a project by Osservatorio di Pavia and Gi.U.Li.A journalists (2021). Laura is also a Founding Member of SWIP Italia (Italian Society for Women in Philosophy) and the Vice-President of SIFA (Italian Society for Analytic Philosophy, 2025-2027).
