In 2023, the Department of Philosophy at the University of Milan inaugurated the PhilTech Research Center for the Philosophy of Technology, aiming to foster an interdisciplinary approach to technology analysis. Embracing diverse fields such as ethics, logic, philosophy of language, media theory, sociology, and education, members of PhilTech engage in comprehensive research.
As PhilTech gears up for 2024, several noteworthy events and developments are on the horizon:
- An international conference, scheduled for 6-7 March 2024 and focused on Bernard Stiegler, is set to be organized by Prof. Carmine Di Martino.
- Dr. Laura Caponetto, currently at Newnham College University of Cambridge, will become part of the Center in June 2024, leading a project on “Communication and New Media: Pragmatic Aspects and Ethical-Political Repercussions.” Under the guidance of Prof. Elisa Paganini, this research delves into the intersection of digital communication pragmatics and political pragmatics, exploring online communicative manipulation and developing counter strategies.
- Anticipated in Autumn 2024 is the announcement of a new postdoc position for a research initiative, jointly led by Prof. Giuseppe Primiero and Prof. Maria Sapignoli. This project, a collaboration between the Logic, Uncertainty, Computation and Information Lab and the Social Anthropology Lab, focuses on “decolonized AI,” examining whether it’s possible to evaluate the decolonization of a given AI system under specific conditions.
- The second edition of the International Conference “Artificial Intelligence: Ethics, Law, and Governance” is expected in Autumn, organized by Prof. Carmine Di Martino and Dr. Roberto Redaelli.
- PhilTech is undergoing expansion in the context of a larger project involving more areas, details forthcoming.
- Members and Labs Associated with PhilTech will unveil additional projects, events and open positions associated with individual research grants, providing opportunities for further interactions within the PhilTech community. Among these
– the Second Como Lake School “Logic for the AI Spring” organised by the LUCI Lab (Logic, Uncertainty, Computation and Information) from 2-6 September 2024
– a forthcoming opening for a postdoc position on the SMARTEST Project led by Prof. Giuseppe Primiero.
